Congrats Woodland Velocity! |
Woodland Velocity with girls from Davis, took
third place overall in the Juventus Coppa D’Oro
in Redwood City last weekend. Velocity’s
goalkeeper, Alexis Mata, was the team’s star
with several quality saves. She allowed only two
goals in four games, with two shutouts. Mata`s
defensive back line of Julisa Pedroza, Dhamaris
De La Cruz, and Katherine Murdoch, helped keep
her out of trouble all tournament.
Velocity tied East Diablo Impact 0-0 in the
first match, then beat the stormy weather and a
tough Sunnyvale Alliance Top Gun squad in the
second game with late goals by Alexis Olmedo and
Sarah Cordano. On Sunday, Velocity lost its only
match of the tournament 1-0 to the eventual
champion Peninsula Power on a quirky goal
deflected in by a Velocity defender, and had to
settle for the consolation match to play for
third place. In the last match, Velocity battled
its old rival Sacramento United to a scoreless
tie until Olmedo knocked in a goal in the
overtime period. Sacramento showed heart by
getting a tying goal in the last 30 seconds of
overtime to send the game to a penalty kick
shootout. In the shootout, Mata saved three
shots, while Pedroza, Tanya Rodriguez, De La
Cruz, and Alana Mockler made their kicks, giving
Velocity the third place cup.
The Redwood City tournament line up also
included Davis residents Claire August, Isolde
Pierce, Rachel Foley, and Alex Castro, and
Woodland residents Angelica Santos, Briana
Hernandez, and Maddie Burgess. Velocity earned
one championship and three cups overall in five
tournament appearances in 2009. The team is
coached by Ramon Hernandez and Jose Pedroza.
